Daedalus has a long and interesting history closely associated with the military and SEEDA wants to ensure that any development is sensitive to its heritage.
Part of the southern area of the site has been designated as a Conservation Area. This means that any development in this area will need to be sensitive and considerate to the existing buildings. Within the Conservation Area, there are three Listed buildings – the Wardroom, Westcliffe House and the Dining Room and Cookhouse. These historically important properties will be enhanced as part of the development and serve as a lasting reminder of the site’s history.

What is a Conservation Area?
Conservation Areas are areas designated by the Local Authority (LA) because they believe it has 'special architectural or historic interest' and has a character or appearance which is worth protecting or enhancing. This legal status does not restrict development within the area but the LA does have greater control over the extent of demolition or development that can occur within it.

What is Listed Building?
A Listed building is a building or structure officially designated as being of special architectural, historical or cultural significance. It can not be demolished, extended or altered without special permission from the local planning authority. There are three types of Listed building status:
- Grade 1: Buildings of outstanding or national architectural or historic interest. This is the most important type of Listed building and is therefore the most difficult to obtain permission to change it.
- Grade 2*: Significant buildings of more than just local interest.
- Grade 2: Buildings of local special architectural or historic interest.
The three Listed buildings at Daedalus are Grade 2 Listed.

A heritage baseline report has been undertaken which provides a brief outline of the site's history as well as considering the importance of all the buildings of any significance at Daedalus.
Memories of Daedalus
In addition to this work Community Consultants, Groundwork Solent, have compiled a fascinating heritage archive which provides information on the general history of the site. They spoke to a number of organisations including Fleet Air Arm, Gosport Society and Gosport Aviation Society as well as local individuals to find out more about people's personal experiences of Daedalus. If you have any stories, memories or memorabilia you would like to add to the archive, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Katie Pereira at Groundwork Solent on 0800 077 8439 or daedalus-project@seeda.co.uk.
